let's talk: last 2 weeks of spring

hi, hello and welcome to today’s blog! I’ll be chatting about some current events :)

Current Events:

The next two weeks bring much silence, many all-nighters and continuing terrible sleeping habits, haha. Before the semester comes to an end, I like to remember what’s been making me smile a bit recently. Like the Inclusion Multicultural Engagement (IME) Banquet and more our Great Expectations Picnic for first year, first gen students (of color). These spaces rarely fail in providing fun, safe and welcoming spaces for students.

The IME Banquet was held at the chapel on SCAMPUS (south campus), and it was really pretty. I’ll include a photo of the stained windows. It was my first time in that chapel, so the moment my roommate and I had a chance to explore we found an upstairs area with beautiful grand windows.

The GE Picnic was just a genuinely fun time thanks to our amazing event planner- Iyannah with the help of our IME director- Joann. We had light sandwiches and games and personally the highlight of the picnic was the sun shining. The light really made all the difference.

Another thing that kept me smiling was our First Annual Poetry of Color that also happened last week. This has to be one of my all time favorite events I engage with at LC as student (of color).

What is Poetry of Color: a space for BIPOC students to write and share monologues on their lives experiences including joy, pain, worries, anything!

This was our first time hosting this event in LC history, and we wanted it to be a continuation of the safe that had been created and fostered through Race Monologues. Which is an event that happens during the Fall semester in accordance with the Ray Warren Symposium. One of the cool things about Race Monologues & Poetry of Color is that those who are interested in participating opt out at any time. It’s all about comfortability for any presenters. Those presenting talk about whatever they'd like to talk about in whatever form they choose, like poetry or a short story.

If you’d like to learn, the IME- LC webpage has more formal information, and the Instagram page has is less formal: @ime_lc .
